Washing Type 3 Curls 

So type 3 curls have been categorized by some as the “easier” curl type that does not require much maintenance. However, contrary to popular belief this is not entirely true. All curls need adequate care and proper maintenance to look their best. Three type curls are no exception to this fact. Regardless of hair type you need a routine that starts with cleansing. Now there’s always a debate about how often one should be washing their curls and we’ve found that the simplest  solution is to wash when your hair is dirty. Experimenting with the frequency that gives you the best and healthiest result is recommended.

Before you get started you want to ensure that you have all your products and tools handy. A huge part of washing your hair requires Detangling your curls. Although type 3 curls have a looser pattern,  working through your hair in a few sections cuts your wash time in half. Also having the right tools such as a denman  brush or wide tooth comb is also a great addition to help with Detangling.

Some naturals prefer to Detangle with their fingers. Although there’s no harm with this method a wide tooth comb may get to some tangles better that your fingers will. In addition to your tools you also want to include the right products. You will need a clarifying or sulphate free shampoo, a moisturizing conditioner and a deep conditioning mask/treatment. 

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s focus on washing type 3 curls depending on your porosity. Here are our top tips for washing type 3 low porosity and type 3 high porosity hair. 

Washing Type 3 Low Porosity Hair.

 Because low porosity cuticles are flat or almost closed it is important to rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water before shampooing to open the cuticles and loosen dirt and product buildup on the scalp.

Low porosity hair is prone to product buildup because the cuticle structure doesn’t allow products to easily penetrate and moisturize hair. As a result type 3 low porosity naturals are encouraged to wash their hair weekly to ensure a clean and healthy scalp as well as to encourage maximum hair benefits. Clarifying shampoos are recommended  to provide a thorough cleanse for a cleaner scalp. Sulphate free shampoos  can also be used but it is a good practice to include a clarifying shampoo at least once a month to tackle stubborn buildup. 

*Frequent co washing or co washing alone is not recommended for low porosity hair. Why? Because co-washes are more of a conditioning cleanser than an actual cleanser and will not remove buildup on your hair as well as a shampoo would.  Co washing is simply encouraging more buildup on your already closed cuticle.

So you’ve washed, applied your rinse out conditioner and you are now ready for your deep conditioner. For low porosity type 3 curls deep conditioners are best used with heat. Meaning when you apply your deep conditioner be sure to let it absorb in your hair under a hooded dryer or a heat cap for maximum penetration. Using heat allows your cuticles to open and better absorb your treatment. Leave your treatment in for thirty minutes to and hour then rinse with cool water to seal moisture in. Moisturize and style as usual after.

Lastly, it is a good practice to minimize the use of protein treatments on low porosity curls. Protein treatments are used to fill the gaps in our hair,cuticles and strengthen our strands.Low porosity curls are usually not lacking in this department and regular protein treatments will do more harm than good, leaving hair hard, brittle and dry. 

Washing Type 3 High Porosity Hair

Unlike our low porosity sisters, high porosity cuticles are wide open. Washing this hair type takes just as much consideration as low porosity type 3 curls. Detangling your curls is key before you cleanse. High porosity hair can be easily damaged and has to be handled with care. To Detangle saturate your hair with water as high porosity hair is more fragile dry. Apply a generous amount of conditioner to Detangle. Be gentle focusing on the ends whether using your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Work through section by section then rinse.

Because the cuticles are open in high porosity hair, maintaining moisture is a challenge. Regular shampoos consist of harsh, stripping chemicals that can create more dryness and damage. Use a sulphate free moisturizing shampoo that allows your scalp to get clean but also does not strip your hair of all its moisture and oils.

Unlike low porosity, co washing can be done more frequently for those with high porosity hair to help maintain a better balance of moisture in your curls than with shampoos. Although great to use, co washing is not an alternative to shampooing. You should shampoo at least every other week to remove dirt and product buildup and to maintain a healthy clean scalp.

Deep conditioning is your moisture and hydration staple and should be incorporated in every wash day. Use deep conditioners that provide intense moisture for dryness. Why? Because high porosity hair loses moisture easily and needs products that target maximum moisture. Deep conditioning can be applied with the help of a hooded dryer or heat cap. However, when rinsing  your deep conditioner, always use cold water to rinse. This ensures that your cuticles become closed and seal in moisture longer. 

*Note- warm water opens cuticles to help  receive moisture and cool/cold water closes and seals cuticles.

As mentioned earlier, protein fills the gaps in our hair and strengthens it. This makes protein perfect for high porosity type 3 curls. So be sure to include protein treatments every other month or include a protein rich rinse out conditioner in your routine to maintain the strength of your hair.
